Hollywood movies are not always set up in Canada but whenever they do, they turn a hit! This is because Canada has the most beautiful and scenic places in the world. And these often become the sole reason of choosing it for movie shoots.

So, let’s check out Top 10 movies of the greatest times that actually set their pace in Canada for production.

1.    The Sweet Hereafter:


 

Storyline:

The 1997’s movie ‘The Sweet Hereafter’ revolves around the tragic accident of a school bus causing death of 14 innocent people. The incident is looked by a lawyer Ian Holm, when he reaches the town side to console the grieving families, a teenage survivor named Sarah Polley confesses about something that changes the face of the incident wholly. A beautiful and catastrophic story directed by an acclaimed Oscar-nominated director Atom Egoyan, the movie truly shows the efforts and style of the director.

The story enfolds many areas of the British Columbia including The City of Merritt, and Community of Spences. The scenic landscape and natural beauty of the British Columbia equally plays a great role in depicting the heart-breaking and dreadful incident to the screen as if it is real. 

2.    Videodrome:


 

Storyline:

The television show namely Videodrome shows unethical and awful happenings; human torture and murder. When a television programmer Max Renn and his partner Nicki brand unfolded the hidden truths, they came to know that these shows were actually based on real incidents and murders. This 1983 story is mysterious, cagy, and gripping, shows the efforts of the director David Cronenberg. However, the movie ends with an unusual conclusion.

The shows were filmized in Toronto showing the famous Red Rocket buses including Financial District, Port Lands, and offices of Global TV. The place where The Cathode Ray Mission was set up is now transformed into a well-known Factory Theatre.

3.    One Week:


 

Storyline:

In 2008, movie One Week was released. This is a story of a young man Ben Tyler, who recently found out about the emergence of cancer cells in his body. From the artisan mind of the director Michael McGowan to the brilliant performance of the leading character, the movie has been brilliantly shot, leaving traces on the streets of Canada.

After a diagnosis of cancer, Ben starts to search the meaning and purpose of the life by riding a vintage motorcycle all the way from Toronto to Tofino.

What could be of more worth than watching a movie having Canadian singer and songwriter Gordon Downie? Not only that, but the leading character starts his journey after reading an inspiring message written on his Tim Horton’s coffee mug. The movie focuses different places of Canada like Sudbury’s Big Nickel, Alberta’s Dinosaur Provincial Park, the World’s Biggest Hockey Stick etc.

4.    Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner:


 

Storyline:

This movie has been directed by the Canadian producer Zacharias Kunuk, listed in an Inuit category. This movie banged the screens in the year 2001. It is an adventurous and epic piece, worth watching. The movie focuses a crime story that unties the knot between two families. Through that course, it shows that how the art of justice privileged and the diplomacy settles between the two families. The movie is regarded as the greatest Canadian film in 2015 by the critics.

The story is all-n-all produced in the Nunavut territory of Northern Canada, shows the life of Inuit people representing historical folk stories of those people from 1,000 years ago. How they live, how they prepare their food and even clothes; is greatly focused on. Their gorgeous mountains, warm igloos, and Nunavut scenery are shown through the walks and words of Atanarjuat. 

5.    Scott Pilgrim vs. the World:


 

Storyline:

In 2010, this movie on-aired with a tinge of little comedy and fantasy coming from the pen of Bryan Lee O’Malley as a graphic novel series, and directed by Edgar Wright. A bass guitarist in a rock-band and a little too shy Scott Pilgrim always finds it difficult to talk with a girl. But when his heart finally fell for a lady Romana Flowers, he has to take in control of all her seven exes to get with her. With all the cinematic influences of the movie and graphic approach, this make it all the more worth-watching.

Another Toronto based movie, including its major attractions like the CN Tower, Distillery Historic District, Casa Loma, the Baldwin Steps, and Lee’s Palace.  

6.    Bon Cop, Bad Cop:


 

Storyline:

Filmed in 2006, Bon Cop, Bad Cop is a detective aka crime movie, directed by Eric Canuel. It is a thrill and action package for all the exhilarating viewers who love to watch such types of movies. An electrifying sense starts when a murder happens at the Ontario-Quebec border. Two detectives from each province are picked to lead the case. Unfortunately, the two detectives share no common thing in each other. Colm Feore is a Toronto based detective having a very serious attitude while Patrick Huard belongs to Montreal with a great sense of humor. The title, because of the distinguishing features of detectives, sounds like Bon Cop, Bad Cop.

Canadian Places:

As the detectives belong to Ontario and Quebec, so these two provinces are majorly portrayed. Apart from that, Hogtown, City of Festivals, Ottawa, and Vancouver have been shown in the movie.

7.    My Winnipeg:


 

Storyline:

Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin in the year 2007, himself visit the Winnipeg where he used to live in his childhood and still is living there. This movie is a biography of the director, capturing in the lenses of a camera, showing his love towards his native city. He calls this place "docu-fantasia” in the film. He tries to revive his childhood memory by catching a laughter in the things like hockey, sledding, watching roaming bison, pipe-smoking contest, seances, frozen horses in the Red river etc. A true and pure movie with a touch of black-n-white tint.

Canadian Places:

The movie is about Winnipeg, a city of Manitoba, Canada. It is a documentary setup in the city to show the historical and dream-like shades of the city. 

8.    The Shipping News:


 

Storyline:

This 2001 movie is based on a renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of a writer Annie Proulx. The movie encircles a man Quoyle who has gone through many hardships and difficulties after the death of his wife. His remarkable and exceptional journey become the basis of this movie when he and his daughter are advised to move to the northern part of the country to their native home. He then starts working as a local newspaper reporter. During his voyage, he unfolds many secrets of his family.    

Canadian Places:

The movie is primarily filmed in the northern Newfoundland, showing beautiful scenery of the cost of Newfoundland. The major places include St. John’s, New Bonaventure, and Trinity. The movie surely gets a remarkable success in capturing the scenic views of the Newfoundland.

9.    What If:


 

Storyline:

Another story directed by Michael Dowse and written by a Canadian writer Elan Mastai. A 2013 Romanticism in touch with comedy, when a medical school dropout boy Wallace starts to fall for his new friend Chantry who is an artist and sadly interested in someone else. How would Wallace transform his feelings into words? Would he be able to approach her or not? Would his love affect their friendship? A hopeful yet epic love story, folded with a perfect romance.   

Canadian Places:

I guess they love Toronto much because this movie is also produced in Toronto, included its not-so-famous places like George Street Diner, Rooster Coffee House, Riverdale Park, and the Royal Cinema. The movie can truly make the audience fall for Toronto heartily.

10.   The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz:



Storyline:

Written by Mordecai Richler in 1959 and aired as a movie in 1974, directed by a Canadian director Ted Kotcheff. The main character named Duddy Kravitz, 18 years old Jewish boy whose father is a middle-class Taxi driver earn to provide for his family and elder son for his medical studies. Duddy lives in a gloom of his father. He wants to do much more for himself to change his bad days of poverty. But he tries to conquer his dreams through the wrong ways. With the days passing by, he keeps becoming a miserable man, forgetting all his responsibilities, be it social or religious.

Canadian Places:

The book illustrates the 1950s Montreal and so does the movie try to. Saint Urban Street is the main view of the movie. Wilensky’s Light Lunch also appear in the movie. It was first started in 1932 and still alive here in Montreal. Its special sandwiches filled with beef salami, bologna, Swiss cheese, and mustard are everyone’s favorite.
